CrossFit Games Open Shoutouts

  • “I’m voting for Angela W. She RX’d the workout knowing she was going to have to work hard to do so. She refused to scale and kept pushing even though she struggled a few times. It was awesome to watch.” ~ Dan
  • “I nominate Katie. She was going to play it safe, she was going to scale, when she asked me what I thought she should do I said depends do you want to finish or do you want to fight? She said fight and fight she did!!! She’s a fighter and a constant inspiration.” ~Cassie
  • “I nominate Dan, he was so patience judging me ? on my forever TTB and DU ?” ~Angela W.
  • “Being the woman behind the camera, I get to watch all the athletes. I’m beyond impressed with those who are not even officially registered for the Open, still pushing their limits each week, particularly Erin who is also training for the big race this weekend! Keep it up, everyone!” ~Angela S.
  • “I nominate Benny. I have the pleasure of working privately with her every week and have witnessed her improvements first hand. She has not only gotten physically stronger, but mentally, too! She told me this year she just wanted to do better than her score last year…she’s CRUSHING that goal!” ~Angela S.
  • “Currently sitting in 94th place in the teens category, Hardie has been on a mission to stay in the top 200 for the Qualifier round! He’s an impressive athlete, with even more impressive values. It’s so exciting to watch him progress each week. Keep it up, Hardie!” ~Angela S.
  • “Shout out to Coach Megan for orchestrating a seamless and energetic class on Sundays! Thank you for all your hard work. We appreciate you!” ~Angela S.
  • “Benny is number 1 on my list for showing spirit of theme putting a little extra effort to dress up and give meaning to her effort! Also Benny dedicated 20.3 to her sister who is breast cancer survivor!” ~Gino
  • CrossFit Games Open Shout Out“Benny always brings a smile and always shows so much enthusiasm.” ~Scott
  • “I nominate Angela W. for 20.3 because she traveled back from vacation, slept 2 hours, and Rx’d the WOD. She pushed for several minutes to fight for one rep of hspu and didn’t give up.”~Megan
  • “Katie was going to play it safe…she was going to scale. But when she asked me what I thought she should do I said depends do you want to finish or do you want to fight? She said fight and fight she did!!! She’s a fighter and a constant inspiration.” ~Cassie
  • “Melissa Regina is there every time, cheering us up from any angle in the box… I hear her voice more than I get to see her, she is awesome!” ~ Angela W
  • “I dedicate my workout to my sissy Maridza.” What a beautiful moment between Benny and her sister, watching Benny fight through each rep in honor of her sister who is a breast cancer survivor.
  • “Last year I only got one handstand push-up. I PRd by 12 reps this year!!” ~ Melissa Regina
  • “I want to nominate Gino for Spirit of the Games. He puts others before himself on a daily basis and truly wants to see everyone succeed. Even though this must have been a difficult week for him he still showed up to coach everyday with a positive attitude, (even though he may have slobbered a little while cheering us on?). CrossFit gyms are a dime a dozen but coaches and people like Gino are very rare.” ~CJ
  • “Nominating Gino for the spirit of the games! Perseverance and always going above and beyond for everybody in the box.”~Eric
  • “My spirit nomination goes to..Liliana !!!! The fact that she did her WOD in her costume is everything!! Her positive energy every day is infectious and she is just amazing.” ~Benny
  • “I wanted to give Angela Weiner a shout-out for the spirit of the games. Last week when I attended a few classes leading up to 20.4 she was there and was so encouraging. Being a novice I tend to get a little frustrated if I can’t pick something up (literally) right away and having her say “you got this” helped! She was also there during 20.4 and seeing a friendly face cheering everyone on was awesome.”
    ~Chelsey
  • “Shout out to Erin for her recent mega race, still participating in the Open workouts and not missing a beat…ever.” ~Angela S
  • “HUGE shout out to Alicia for not giving up. She had her eye on that muscle up…she attacked and got her first one during 20.5! The best feeling EVER!” ~Angela S.
  • “I want to give a shout out to my wife Alicia who took a giant step toward her long term goal by improving by 510 spots in the world year over year to 882. In 20.5 she got her very first muscle-up and crushed her Diane time by almost 4 minutes in 20.3. Outside of her own goals she is always there as a cheerleader for her community as well.” ~Brian Z

Spirit of the Games

As you’re aware, we’re doing things a little differently this year.

Just a couple months ago, CrossFit Salus Coach Lisa was diagnosed with cancer. This will be the first Open she’s missed in 8 years and so we decided to do things a little differently this year for the 2020 CrossFit Games Open. Instead of intramural teams, we will rally together as ONE.

One strong, amazing community here to support our friend and coach ?.

So, when the workouts get tough (and they will) and you feel like quitting, remember this: Together, we are #lisastrong

Intramural Open 2019

For the second year, we will be holding our team-based “Intramural Open 2019 competition” to make things even more FUN and exciting during the CrossFit Games Open. What was once an intimidating event… is no more.

2019 Get on a Team CrossFit Salus Intramural OpenWhat is the CrossFit Open?

If you’re new to the sport, The CrossFit Open is an annual worldwide competition. Each workout is a secret kept by the Director of the CrossFit games- Dave Castro, which he releases on each Thursday evening during the Open. Athletes across the globe have until the following Monday to complete the workout, and submit their scores online.

Every year at CrossFit Salus, we participate “in-house” as a group. It’s a ton lot of fun.  And best of all, with the scaled, masters and teens divisions, anyone can do it. Did you just join the box last month? Last week? Yup, we’re talking to you!

Last year, we almost got the whole box to participate – you won’t want to miss this! Take a peak at last year’s shout outs for a bit of inspiration.

Intramural Open 2019 at CrossFit Salus

Based on the success from last year, of course we had to do it again!! But, based on some feedback we also made a few changes, we hope you’ll enjoy.

The 2019 Intramural Open at CrossFit Salus will focus on inclusion and celebration… not just competition (though there’s a lot of that, too).

Our first step is to select three Team Captains. These three Captains are fun, supportive, positive and are huge parts of our Salus community. They work hard, have great attitudes and are ready to help us keep things interesting!

So, without further ado, your 2019 Intramural Open Team Captains & Team Names are:

2019 Intramural Open Team Captains

  • Eric Burke, Team Captain of “Jacked in the Box” (Black)
  • Erin Winters, Team Captain of the “Heart & Swole” (Red)
  • Lianne Livelsburger, Team Captain of “Snatch Me Outside -How Bout Dat”  (Blue)

Draft for the Intramural Open

We have met with the team captains. Each captain is able to select one co-captain (a safety, who cannot be traded).  All coaches and athletes who are currently registered for the CrossFit Games Open were automatically put into the draft pool and selected onto their teams. They will be in contact with you ASAP so you know whose team you are on.

Now, your three Captains will have the freedom to recruit the remainder of the box…and guess what? They’ll be asking YOU!

What’s Next?

  • Official registration ($20) is done through the CrossFit Games website. (Note: It is not mandatory to be officially registered in order to participate in the Salus Intramural.)
  • Become a part of an Intramural team at CrossFit Salus. Please provide a minimum of $8 to your captain that will go toward team flair – if you were around last year you probably noticed how much these captains put into this event. We will have an envelope in the office you can drop off cash or venmo directly to your captains.
  • Contribute your own team flair and get involved with the craziness of the next 5 weeks!
  • Snag a shirt (see below) before 2/13.
  • Each team will have their own private Facebook group so they can secretly communicate throughout the Intramural Open.
  • As part of the OPEN spirit, all athletes will also be judging other athletes. Prepare yourself by checking out this post, “Judging for the CrossFit Open.”

Intramural Open Shirts

intramural open shirtShirts are available to order online now, use the code: SALUS: CreateMyTee.com/Join/72287

Shirts are not mandatory, just part of the fun. Choose your team color and customize it with your team name on the back, your name or whatever your heart desires! 🙂

Please note, the tshirt order will have to be a fast turn-around, and will close on Wednesday the 13th. Athletes who register after this time may still participate on a team, but will not receive a team shirt.

Updated Points and Scoring System for the Intramural Open

Intramural Open
The Intramural Open is designed to encourage participation and, you guessed it, fun.

The Intramural Open at CrossFit Salus is designed to encourage participation and, you guessed it, fun. Scoring reflects those goals:

+1 Point – Attendance
Every member of the team that completes an Open workout at CrossFit Salus each week (or submits their video and score to games.crossfit.com if traveling, for example) will earn one point for their team. Maximum one point per athlete per workout, multiple attempts/redos will not count for more points. This is applied for all competitors. Captains and co-captains will tally their team points for attendance.

Weighted Points – Salus Leaderboard
Based on feedback from last year, we’ll be using the CrossFit Salus Wodify leaderboard, to apply weighted points for each division. This includes: men, women, each masters division and each teens division. This will combine RX and Scaled options. For example, if Steve does the workout RX’d and gets 1st place out of 5 RX men and 5 scaled men, his team will receive 10 points. If Brian does the workout scaled and gets 1st place out of 5 scaled men when there are also 5 other RX men in his division and, his team will get 5 points. Captains and co-captains will tally their team points for the leaderboard.

+2 Points – PR!
Celebrate your Personal Record with a ring on the bell then gain 2 points for your team! Captains and co-captains will tally their team points for PRs! Limit to 2 points per person per week. For example, if you rock your first double under, then you PR with 10 in a row, you only get points for one PR.

+3 Points – Hardest Worker
Each week the box will choose one athlete who demonstrates grit – working the hardest in that week’s Open workout. This athlete can be Rx or scaled will earn their team 3 extra points. The recipient of these points will be via voting process.

+3 Points – Spirit of the Open
Each week we will also identify one athlete who displays overflowing SPIRIT during that week’s workouts. You’ll notice this person always cheering others on, volunteering to judge others, helping people get prepared, doing something amazing they never thought possible, etc. This person can be Rx or scaled and will earn their team 3 extra points. The recipient of these points will be via voting process.

More Details for the Open

  • All regularly-scheduled classes on Fridays during the Open will be designated for CrossFit Open workouts.
  • Starting Feb. 22, we will remove the Friday morning weightlifting class (9:30) and open it up as a CrossFit class (in addition to the regular 10:30am) during the 5 weeks of the open.
  • Please come prepared and review all workouts and movement standards in advance.
  • When you arrive, sign up for a heat, help judge, take pictures and loudly cheer everyone on!
  • Bring friends or family to spectate and contribute to the cheering crowd!
  • If you are unable to attend Friday, you will have a chance to makeup or even redo your workout on Sunday during Basic Training hour. You must be aware of all movement standards and equipment/space required, have a judge lined up, and be willing to judge others that may also want to do the workout during that same time.
  • If Fridays and/or Sundays do not work, we will also have a “last chance” opportunity for you on Mondays pending space and equipment availability during regular class times. You will still need to reserve a spot for that class, and must be aware of the movement standards and equipment/space required, recruit a judge and be willing to judge others that may also want to do the workout during that time as well. Please note, coaches are unable to judge athletes during Monday’s class time.

Purpose

Intramural Open CrossFit Salus MiddletownTO HAVE FUN! And, yeah, and to test the fitness that you’ve work so hard to build throughout the year. At the end of the 5 weeks, we’ll gather for a fun awards ceremony potluck.

“A huge shout out to Angie for getting me through the open and motivating me to push myself to new levels. When I say Angie is the epitome of multitasking life business and Sport it’s an understatement. When Angie sets her heart on a goal she takes action. Her journey to this point has been a head-to-head fight with tough competitors, what amazes me about Angie is her ability be consistent throughout all that she does. As a mother, as a business owner, as an employee and as an athlete. She raises to an elite level, within those things she inspires her family, impresses her employer and builds a legacy in her business. I’M So proud of her for all of those things, that no-one competition can have more value than her journey and her Legacy.” Gino

GREGORY DOUGLAS-

“Greg deserves a shout for 17.5 because he did it with a screw in his knee six month post op, dubs can’t be fluid yet but he gutted through and we poked fun at him the whole way. That was great, he didn’t take it or himself too seriously.” ~Pat
“I had the privilege to judge Greg in 17.3. He deserves a special shout because we all got to see him crush this WOD. After failing to get 225 snatch, he stuck with it and nailed it. It was awesome to see how all of his hard work paid off.” ~Dave

SAL MANNARINO-

“Sal started the Open at scaled, not realizing how the scoring went. But 17.2-17.5 he went Rx. Each WOD had something a little easier and a little harder for Sal. He came SO CLOSE to a bar MU. I see those in his immediate future. The weights were heavy, but he never stopped. When he finished 8 rounds of 17.5 at 30 minutes, he said “I can finish 2 rounds in 10 minutes.” He knew he had it. OLGA COTOS-

“Being so new to CrossFIt you could easily see her being intimidated by the Open. Not Olga. She went out and hit those snatches in 17.3 like nobody’s business. Fast through the middle and straight to depth. No way you’d know she was new to any of this! Same with the DB snatches. Watch out for her in 2018!” ~Lisa

SCOTT BROWNFELD-

“I judged Scott during 17.2. Prior to the Wod Scott was concerned he wouldn’t be able to get any chest to bar pull ups. His goal was just to power through the other moves, lunges, cleans and toes to bar and get a good tiebreak. He did just that but additionally, much to his surprise, Scott started knocking out chest to bar pull ups like a pro.” ~Michelle

CHRIS WALSH-

”I judged Chris Walsh in 17.3. This person deserves a special shout out because I witnessed him get stronger as he went up the ladder. Nice work!” ~Matt

determined not to let the double-unders get the best of her! True perseverance!” Lori Reid ?
“I judged Veronica in 17.1. Well it’s so much to say about V. She is an amazing athlete and friend, she pushes and surprises herself every time. The first time she did 17.1, i knew she passed herself more than she needed, and even though she did amazing, i knew she would come back to redo it and kill it, which she did. It’s always a pleasure to watch her or workout with her.” ~Lili

SHAWN WINTERS-

I judged Shawn in 17.5. This person deserves a special shout out because I witnessed them kill it under 10 mins. When it was my turn, he saw my wrists were hurting and he let me borrow his wraps. I knew he worked his ass off when he helped wrap me up with the shakiest of hands. ~Olga

ERIN WINTERS-

I judged Erin in her 17.2 re-do. She deserves a special shout out because I witnessed her show those toes to bar who was boss! ~Sue
“”I judged Erin Winters in 17.3. This person deserves a special shout out because I witnessed her crush chest to bar one rep at a time!!” ~Alicia

SAM MONROE-

I didn’t judge Sam in 17.5 but this person deserves a special shout out because I witnessed him fight to the end. We all know Sam smokes double unders. The thrusters were a bit more of a challenge. It looked painful. It looked hard. It looked like everything that I’m learning Crossfit embodies. To keep fighting, to keep trying to complete the WOD. To be your best. He showed true character and did not give up. ~Olga

CAMILLA GLUCKSTEIN-

I judged Camilla in 17.5 and she deserves a shout out because she stuck to her plan despite being sore and tired AND having to rush work right after. Seeing her flow through it gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in my redo. Great positive vibe! ~Pat
“I judged Camilla in 17.4. Camilla deserves a special shout out because I witnessed her crush her goal! She went in with a number in her head and she achieved it! It was so inspiring to watch her efficiency and pace for each stage of the workout. I loved her little whistle that she would do that seemed to calm and focus her. Not sure she realized she did this!! Haha! Camilla, you’re such an awesome little machine!! ? I think she’ll know it was me” melissa

CHRISTOPHER BERNARDINI-

I judged Chris Bernadini during 17.5. He showed amazing poise and endurance in grinding out each round with virtually no rest. ~Chris Aquaviva

LISA RICKER-

Although I didn’t judge Lisa, I witnessed her selflessly come in and judge so many other athletes, myself included. Sh stayed late Thursday nights and came early Friday mornings to prepare for the 6am Open workout. Judging and coaching takes a lot of energy, and even after all that, she gave it her all for each workout. Proud to have her on the Salus Coaching staff! ~Angela

CHRISTINE INGLETON-

“I judged Christine Ingleton in 17.5 and she never quit–even when her shoes came untied and tripped her up during dubs!” ~Lisa
“I judged Christine in 17.4. This person deserves a special shout out because I witnessed them smoke the 55 deadlifts. When she got to the 55 cal row, she somehow still had plenty of legs to aggressively tackle the rower.” ~Olga

JACQUIE GALLELLO-

“I judged Jacquie and witnessed her perform moves that were way past her comfort zone – especially dealing with a hip injury. When the 17.5 rolled around she thought about doing quick singles on the deadlift…instead she busted out sets of 4 or more like a beast! Good job Jacquie! ~Angela
“I had the privilege to Judge Jacquie in 17.5. She deserves a special shout out on this one for her determination. I witnessed her preserver through this workout in noticeable pain from her bad hip and we know how much fun thrusters are to begin with. It was great to see her push through.” ~Dave

“I judged Cassie in 17.4 This person deserves a special shout out because I witnessed her (safely) push herself during a workout that would’ve been challenging, even for someone who wasn’t pregnant. She makes no excuses, shows up with a smile, and continues to make her health a priority all while dealing with the demands of being a pregnant mom!! ~Erin Winters
“I definitely want to give a shout out to Cassie B. even though I didn’t judge her. She completed all 5 workouts while 5 months pregnant and that is impressive!” ~Veronica
“I judged Cassie in 17.5 and think she’s awesome because she worked so hard in this (and every) workout, she’s 5 months pregnant but that doesn’t slow her down a bit. She also judged me for 17.5, and is the best motivator and cheerleader anyone could ask for.” ~Kate

SPIRIT OF THE GAMES RECIPIENT: SUSAN MULVANEY-

“I judged Sue Mulvaney in 17.3 (in fact almost all of them). This person deserves a special shout out because I witnessed her PR her snatch not once, but multiple times over. She approached this workout initially feeling very apprehensive. However, nerves didn’t get to her and she remained determined to keep at it until she got at least one rep. Admittedly, snatches were a lift that had challenged her mentally for a long time and to see her stay positive in spite of some missed attempts and continue to meet her goal was something I’m glad I was a part of. ~Erin Winters

What is the CrossFit Open, really?

If you’re new to CrossFit and not sure what all the “Open” buzz is about — check it out: the CrossFit Open is a five-week online competition that takes place in CrossFit boxes all over the world. Since 2011, every Thursday night for five weeks, a new workout is released and we get the chance to watch top athletes test out the workout on a live feed. These workouts are known to be physically and mentally grueling, featuring movements we all know and love and sneaking in new movements along the way.

They they are meant to push us past our limits.

2017 CrossFit OpenPushing Past Our Limits

The energy that fills the box as we complete Open workout each week is invigorating and inspiring. Because of the energy of competition and comradery, it is very common for athletes competing in The CrossFit Games Open to accomplish many CrossFit “firsts.”

This year was no different.

CrossFit Salus Community

Once again, the Open workout has showcased what an amazing community we are surrounded by at CrossFit Salus. These past five weeks we encountered the importance of staying positive in the face of a challenge and celebrating every accomplishment, every effort, every moment.

Become the Best Version of You

As coaches, nothing is more satisfying that witnessing the moments when someone overcomes a physical or mental challenge and breaks through their barriers. Every time we witness those moments when you surprise yourself, you inspire us to continue working to be our best selves. On behalf of all the coaches at CrossFit Salus, here’s to the conclusion of another great year in the CrossFit Open!

Congratulations to Gino and Pat!

While the leaderboard is still settling until Wednesday, I think it’s safe to say a huge congratulations to Coach Gino and superstar athlete, Pat for making top 200 in their Masters division age-group which qualifies them for the next round: In-Box Regionals!!

Just look at these numbers!!

Patrick finished at 116 out of over 24,007 other athletes in his age division worldwide (#3 in NJ).

Gino finished at 145 out of over 13,372 other athletes in his age division worldwide (#2 in NJ).

That that sink in a moment. WOW!! This is pretty amazing. Be sure to support them when you see them training. In-box regionals is the weekend of April 22.

Thank You

To everyone who came early, stayed late, cheered hard and counted reps, thank you!

A special thank you to Coach Lisa for always having score sheets printed, duct tape ready and movement standards on point- all in time for 6am.

Thank you to Coach Greg for all your extra help judging athletes and coaching even when you weren’t scheduled to coach.

And thank you to Coach Gino for always putting everyone first and staying up way too late on Thursday nights strategizing how everything would flow at the box.

Spirit of the Games Award

On Friday at 6pm during the Potluck and final celebration, we’ll feature a fun picture slideshow, good food, good times and the announcement of our Spirit of the Games recipient! The Spirit of the Games Award will honor one of our athletes who we feel most embodies the spirit of community and comradery. Stay tuned!

Side Note From Coach Angela

And just because I’m a very transparent person (this is Coach Angela talking) I want you all to know that while I didn’t reach my personal goal of being in the top 200 worldwide, I know it’s all part of the process. Right now, it looks like I finished around 226 out of 26,957 other athletes in my age division worldwide.

Am I disappointed? You bet I am. Do I want to cry? Kinda. But I have allowed myself time to be disappointed, pinpointed my weaknesses and I choose to keep fighting to become the best version of myself with a plan to attack those weaknesses head-on. And at the same time, I have to remember to be nice to myself. Yeah, I didn’t finish top 200, but I am celebrating the fun fact that I finished #1 in NJ. 🙂

It’s way too easy to let all the endless challenges in our life and in the box frustrate us to the point of giving up. Instead, my goal is to be an inspiration to all of you to use your own challenges as motivation to keep getting better. Never settle. And be nice to yourself in the process.

~Coach Angela
